I am currently up in the Lake District staying with friends and listening to the rain patter on the caravan roof…standard weather for the Lakes.
Despite the gloomy weather yesterday and not being able to see the top of the hills around us due to low cloud, we began our ascent of Old Man in Coniston (where we are staying). A few facts about Old Man…
Old Man is 803m high (2634ft)
The mountain was formally used for slate mining and some copper mining (which meant it had lots of loose slate underfoot!)
It is the 12th highest mountain in England.
And I am not very fit….
Despite feeling like I was dying on more than one occasion and worrying I was going to be blown down a mountain by the gusty winds/slip and impale myself on a jagged piece of slate…I made it to the top!!!
I didnt take my camera due to the weather (we were in the cloud so couldnt really see anything!) so here are a couple of phone photos.

A few things I have learnt…
1. I need to go to the gym more and get fitter.
2. I have vertigo more than I realised!
3. My waterproof jacket…isnt waterproof any more!!!
I lived for 10 years in Cumbria and rain was something you got used to. However, when the sun did come out, the Lakes are stunning. Sorry you didn’t get to see Coniston in all its glory. You will have to go back!!!!!
Kate
Well it isn’t my first visit to Coniston, we went last Easter to visit the same friends so I saw it in all its glory last year! I have been to the Lakes before, just wish they were closer, it is so peaceful up there and you clear our all the London air and fill up on fresh rain and countryside smells
I really hope I’ll be able to go back again! Always have such a nice time…no matter how much pain it is to walk up a mountain!
Is the Lake District where Beatrix Potter owned some farms!
Lovely photos!
You have a keen eye!
